Sanergy toilet boosts business for Nairobi landlord

SWIFT Consortium partner Sanergy is continuing to recruit franchisees in Nairobi, supporting its mission to provide a sustainable sanitation solution to low-income communities not easily served by conventional sewerage systems.

Sanergy’s model is based on the Fresh Life Toilet, a low-cost, high-quality toilet unit (complete with handwashing facilities) that has a small footprint and so can easily be installed in densely populated slum areas.  Waste is collected in a cartridge, which is changed for a clean one every day by Sanergy Frontline’s waste management operators.  The waste in turn is converted into fertilizer, animal feed and energy.

Some Fresh Life Toilets are to be found in community premises such as schools, churches and clinics.  Others are operated on a pay-per-use basis by local entrepreneurs.  And Sanergy is finding that word of mouth means that its sanitation model is increasingly popular with landlords, with many installing Fresh Life Toilets for their tenants.

One such landlord is Haron Nyaguoka who is based in the Mukuru Kwa Reuben informal settlement in eastern Nairobi.  Since installing his Fresh Life Toilet, he has found it easier to secure tenants and he has even been able to raise his rents slightly, to reflect the better, significantly cleaner facilities he is offering.  He reports that it is cost effective for tenants to pay a higher rent because access to Fresh Life Toilets allows them to avoid paying to visit other toilets on a pay-per-use basis.

To learn more about how Haron decided to try out Fresh Life Toilets, and his plan to install further Toilets in the future, please visit this page on the Sanergy website.

And you can read here about how the Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, UK Secretary of State for International Development, and other VIPs recently visited Sanergy’s Mukuru facility in east Nairobi.

About SWIFT

Since 2014, the Sustainable WASH In Fragile Contexts (SWIFT) Consortium has been working to provide access to water and sanitation and to encourage the adoption of basic hygiene practices in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in Kenya. Various partners implement SWIFT’s actions in both target countries, in collaboration with governments as well as water providers, including utilities. The consortium is led by Oxfam, and includes Tearfund and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) as global members. The SWIFT programme is funded by UK aid from the UK government under a Payment by Results (PbR) contract.
