WHAT

The SWIFT Consortium has provided access to sustainable water and sanitation
and encouraged the adoption of basic hygiene practices in DRC and Kenya. It is now working to ensure its interventions are sustainable

Sustainable water

The SWIFT Consortium has provided sustainable water in DRC and Kenya through activities including:

  • Drilling boreholes and improving pipelines;
  • Constructing shallow and hand-dug wells and installing hand pumps;
  • Rehabilitating protected springs and constructing gravity-fed water systems;
  • Installing solar pumping systems;
  • Rehabilitating and upgrading water points;
  • Strengthening water utility companies;
  • Training water users and water management committees. Find out more.
Sustainable sanitation

SWIFT has provided access to sustainable sanitation through a range of different approaches. In DRC, it has promoted the ‘Healthy Villages and Schools‘ approach, a step-by-step process of village mobilisation during which communities are supported to build latrines. In Kenya, SWIFT rolled out Community-Led Total Sanitation in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands region, and worked with Sanergy to install ‘Fresh Life Toilets‘ in schools and communities in the informal settlements of Nairobi. Find out more.

Sustainable hygiene

SWIFT’s work to promote improved hygiene behaviour in Kenya includes creating School Health Clubs and working with radio stations to produce mass-media public health broadcasts which are engaging and locally relevant.

In DRC, SWIFT has set up Community Health Clubs in rural villages and trained ‘community motivators’ in hygiene awareness through the ‘Healthy Villages and Schools’ approach. Find out more.

About SWIFT

Since 2014, the Sustainable WASH In Fragile Contexts (SWIFT) Consortium has been working to provide access to water and sanitation and to encourage the adoption of basic hygiene practices in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in Kenya. Various partners implement SWIFT’s actions in both target countries, in collaboration with governments as well as water providers, including utilities. The consortium is led by Oxfam, and includes Tearfund and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) as global members. The SWIFT programme is funded by UK aid from the UK government under a Payment by Results (PbR) contract.
