LIBERIA (ended Dec 2014)

The SWIFT programme initially included activities in Liberia as well as DRC and Kenya,
but the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa led to these activities being terminated
in December 2014.

The SWIFT programme in Liberia was to be implemented by partners including Oxfam, Tearfund, WSUP, Concern Worldwide, the Association of Evangelicals of Liberia (AEL), Africa AHEAD and EQUIP Liberia.

Activities included rolling out the Community-Led Total Sanitation approach, as in Kenya, including supporting the construction of household pit latrines; setting up Community Health Clubs (CHCs), as in DRC; and hygiene promotion activities to achieve behaviour change.

Other activities planned included constructing hand-dug wells and hand-drilled wells; drilling boreholes; constructing gravity-spring systems; fitting public water stands; installing hand-pumps and solar-powered submersible pumps; and constructing elevated water-storage tanks.

SWIFT also planned to build capacity among local county teams from the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and Ministry of Public Works.

About SWIFT

By March 2016, the SWIFT Consortium had reached almost 850,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya with safe water or sanitation, and hygiene promotion activities - in some cases all three. It will continue to work with communities, local authorities, health bodies, utilities and radio stations until March 2018 to build capacity and ensure interventions are sustainable. In March 2017, SWIFT started preparations for a second programme in DRC that will reach more than 700,000 people with WASH activities by December 2018. The SWIFT Consortium is funded with UK aid from the British people under a ‘Payment by Results’ contract.
